Tallinn Maritime Days will present surprise concerts and water carnival

The highlights of this year’s festival will include the premiere of the performance ‘Salt’ by Helena Tulve,  the water carnival and ‘L’Arlecchino don Giovanni’ in cooperation with Nargen Festival, and two fascinating musical performances: Tanel Padar & The Sun, as well as Tõnis Mägi and Chalice alongside a symphonic orchestra.

This year ‘Tallinn Maritime Days’ will commence on Friday 15th July. Tanel Padar & The Sun along with the Estonian Youth symphonic orchestra will perform at 20.00 on the stage of Admiralty Inlet. The idea of performing the most popular of their songs together with a grand symphonic orchestra was conceived four years ago. It will finally be realized during ‘Tallinn Maritime Days 2011’. Popular works as well as songs that music fans may not be familiar with have been arranged for symphonic orchestra by Andrus Rannaääre and Tomi Rahula. The conductors are Jüri-Ruut Kangur and Tomi Rahula. Danel Pandre, musician of The Sun, stated: ‘We have put in more than a little effort, and, certainly, we are excited to see the outcome’.

Visitors will also have the chance to listen to the Estonian Youth symphonic orchestra at the final concert of the Tallinn Maritime Days. Fifty musicians will perform together with Tõnis Mägi and Chalice at 19.30 on Sunday 17th July, on the stage of Admiralty Inlet.

The hangars that are currently being renovated for the new Estonian Maritime Museum will be opened late Friday evening on 15th July, at 22.00. The audience will have an opportunity to enjoy the premiere of the work ‘Salt’ by the composer Helena Tulve and video artist Tarvo Hanno Varres. ‘Salt’ has been specially commissioned for the European Capital of Culture and involves a huge amount of experience, innovation and artistry. Furthermore, the piece has been especially composed for performance within the hangars, thus considering their acoustics and design as well as their significant historical value. Texts of the work have been written by Maarja Kangro. Sopranos Eve Kopli and Tui Hirv, Riivo Kallasmaa (oboe), Kristi Muhling (zither) and the ensemble Paukenfest will perform at the concert. ‘Salt’ will also be presented on Saturday 16th July.

On Friday 15th July there will be a range of exciting and eclectic concerts held near the harbour. From sunset till sunrise Peetri Harbour will be the venue of the ‘Mutant Disco’, which is part of the Club 2011 party series hosted by the European Capital of Culture 2011. Thereafter, on Saturday 16th July at 4.30am, guests will have a chance to attend the ‘Sunrise Concert’ on board of the Kajsamoor schooner on Tallinn bay together with Tõnu Raadik and Henn Rebane.

The next event will begin on Sunday at 14.00 on the Town Hall Square with the procession of the water carnival of Nargen festival followed by L’Arlecchino don Giovanni - a spectacular performance from Pantakin Company that is considered the world’s most famous Italian mask theatre.

The maritime events that will be held at the three Tallinn harbours and on the Culture kilometre will present unforgettable experiences on land and sea. Not only will there be the traditional yacht cruises and fairs but also an abundant concert programme and an annual tourist conference. The legendary historical boat Krusenstern will arrive to the city. Furthermore a regatta along Muhu strait will end there. Also sailing boat competitions of Olympic Class 49 and the regatta of Fevas will be conducted. Finally, visitors will have an opportunity to watch performances of a shadow theatre on the yachts’ sails.
Besides that, the audience will be offered a chance to participate in the festival ‘Baltic Trembita’. The international barrel-organ festival will also be held as well as the LIFT11 festival of urban installations.
